Those in English Studies or Literary Studies are in study of the use of signs. Humans in our galaxy use linguistic and other communication and need to understand the nature and processes of their signification to use them effectively. So, English is primarily a discipline that examines signs in the text, even through imaginative writings like literary texts and critical ones. That means that a semiotic framework is suitable for examining data in English Studies, particularly now that modern technology has changed the face of writings.
Why semiotics is relevant as a framework for analysis in English Studies:
1. English studies provinces of knowledge focus mainly on how the linguistic sign works.
2. Modern technology has changed the face of the literary text, thus making the signification worth studying.
3. Study the linguistic or literary sign helps us even to understand semiotics better.
Some areas in English studies where we can deploy semiotics:
1. Creative writing,
2. Criticism of texts,
3. Emoticons in social media,
4. Visual data in life and culture
5. Rituals in folklore.
6. Signification in the theater or films.
Some relevant questions on the application of semiotics to English studies :
1. What type of sign is predominantly at work in this text?
2. Do signs interact in this text, which, and how?
3. What are the internal processes deployed to craft each type of interacting sign?
4. What are the signs trying to do their audience?
5. Does any group or anybody have control over the signs?
Some aspects of English studies needing the application:
All the aspects can be studied in the semiotic framework but the following are obvious.
1. Captions of essays and books,
2. Names of characters,
3. Types and functions of illocutionary expressions,
4. What characters say,
5. Spaces, places, and movements,
6. Time or period,
7. Messages and their media,
8. Interactions of signs.
Theatre/Drama and semiotics: areas of viable analysis.
1. Movements made by characters, often
studied under kinesics.
2. Space is also a viable area. Space may be used by characters to indicate things. Under Semiotics, it is seen as proxemics.
3. Configurations.
4. Colours in costuming,
5. Speech acts.
6. Various types of visual communication.
Semiotics and Poetry: viable areas
1. Speaking voice
2. Choice of code/media
3. Dominant imagery and other images
4. Speech acts
5. Other signs made inevitable by technology and deployed as a tool for rhetoric.
Semiotics and prose: some viable areas
1. Naming of characters
2. Narrative point-of-view
3. Tenses (time setting)
4. Characters' lects
5. Other visual media, such as maps
6. Descriptions of behavior and of places and things.
Concluding Remarks :
We can see that English or literary studies are studies of signs. They demand more insight from semiotics, with research designs that cater fully for the kinds of diverse data they focus on.
